Fall Launch – Another Year in the Books!

The last few months have been very stressful for the American people with the future of our government at hand. Don’t worry I’m not going to get political or go on a rant… I’m going to give you my take on the 2016 Fall Launch!  Some of the new shows/returning shows are the way for many to escape the reality that is here and now.  Some should be thankful we aren’t experiencing a “zombie apocalypse.”  It’s now time to jump into the world of Television and try to escape from the real world.  Escapism is a human necessity due to the nature of events that are part of the today’s reality.

I’ve been able to get away from the reality of things by enjoying a little laughter. Laughter is key and I’m thankful that a few new shows have been able to give me a chuckle or two. Two of my favorite new comedies this Fall are ABC’s Speechless and NBC’s The Good Place.

I love “The Good Place” starring Kristen Bell (a Michigan native) as Eleanor Shellstrop, a deceased woman, who has entered an afterlife utopia called “The Good Place” after being mistaken for a human rights lawyer.  Sounds a little on the heavy side for a comedy, but it’s a gem. Kristen Bell and Ted Danson are amazingly clever together. Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and TV Guide are positive. Liam Matthews from TV Guide said that “this show could restore NBC’s tarnished comedy brand to it’s former glory”. The Good Place is currently on hiatus ‘til Jan 5th, but you can watch the first nine episodes @ NBC.com.

Another one of my favorite actresses, Minnie Driver from Good Will Hunting fame, is currently staring in The ABC comedy “Speechless”.  Definitely not your “normal” formula for a comedy – its uniqueness is refreshing! This show rewrites the definition of a sitcom.  “The series follows the DiMeo family, and their own unique personalities: Maya, (Minnie Driver) a take-charge mother with an no-holds-barred attitude, Jimmy (John Ross Bowie, from The Big Bang fame), is a husband who doesn’t care what others think, Dylan, their no-nonsense daughter, Ray, their middle child who’s the “brains” in the family, and their oldest son, J.J., a high school student with cerebral palsy,  who has a biting wit and sense of humor.”* (Wikipedia)

This show is exactly what everyone needs… many thanks to Scott Siveri, best known up to now for being a writer and producer of Friends. He has created a show that is funny and makes you forget all the problems outside your living room, even if it’s for only 30 minutes on Wednesday nights. If you haven’t tuned in yet, you can stream all episodes @ ABC.go.com. I highly recommend.  I’ve added those two comedies to The Real O’Neals and The Big Bang Theory as must-haves on my DVR, just in case I’m not home or a crazy night of homework with my teenage daughter.

Other new shows that are scheduled weekly (if time permits) for me to snuggle up on the sofa with some cocoa and tune-in to are: Designated Survivor, American Housewife, This is Us, Timeless and MacGyver (reboot from the 80’s classic). All have been given a passing grade from the critics and TV viewers.  I’m hoping that Richard Dean Anderson will eventually make a guest appearance on the show (MacGyver) that made him an 80’s heartthrob.

Past favorites of mine that are back are Criminal Minds, Madam Secretary and The Big Bang Theory.  Shows that we (me) have to wait and see won’t be returning ‘til January 2017 – they include Grimm and Scandal. Scandal returns January 19th – perfect timing since the Inauguration of the newly elected President will (and always) takes place on January 20th.  By then my DVR should be cleared and ready to go with all my shows (and yours) for 2017.

Fall launch is always special at Millenia3 – this year wasn’t any different. It’s one of our busiest times, but now with the Holidays on the way, the hard works continues – but I hope you will take the time to view a few of my favorites and enjoy a giggle or two. So kick off your shoes and snuggle up on the couch with someone you love – I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised. And you might be adding my favorites to your DVR!
